AD 434 – Aetius 1.0
By the year AD 434, the Western Roman Empire stands at the edge of survival. Its frontiers are breached, its coffers depleted, and its authority challenged by barbarian kings who now rule lands once governed by Rome’s laws. The imperial court at Ravenna is weakened by intrigue and indecision, while the provinces of Gaul, Hispania, and Africa slip ever further from central control. Yet the idea of Rome endures — not merely as territory, but as a civilisation forged through law, discipline, and imperial destiny.
In this age of decline, the fate of the West rests not in the hands of emperors, but in the will of one man: Flavius Aetius, Magister Militum and last great general of the Western Roman world. Raised among barbarians, hardened by war, and skilled in the politics of both Rome and its enemies, Aetius commands a fragile balance of Roman legions, foederati allies, and uneasy truces — including his perilous understanding with the Huns. Through diplomacy, calculated brutality, and masterful command, he alone holds the crumbling provinces together.
