Kuhmo, Finland
Finally after years I have a chance to publish this. It went through numerous versions and optimizations. Originally starting in 2015 with 5x5km terrain, with intention of learning A3 tools along with Tonto creating his VT5 back then. HDD crashes and files lost between with other projects, this 16x16km terrain should be now finally released :).
The terrain is based on real world location and made from 2-meters heightmap data and satellite imagery, which has been altered to make it suitable for ARMA and to improve gameplay, however it is pretty close.
Terrain features marshes, lot of forestry roads as the region is.. Well full of forest so logging is common, hunting and fishing are popular activities. Given the location and history of the area, it makes is suitable for many scenarios.
This region saw heavy fighting in Winter War 1939-1940, originally there were only Seperate Battalion 14 (ErP.14) with 151 men. It was believed Red Army would have smaller detachements here that probably would cross the border, but in fact it was 54th Division that crossed the border at 2 places, the northern road isnt part of this terrain unfortunately with size limitations.
Situation was becoming dire and after Suomussalmi and Raate-road battles approx. 100km north had ceased, 9th Division was moved into Kuhmo to aid the troops there. Kuhmo was more costlier to Finnish forces than example battle of Suomussalmi and Raate.
Red Army troops from the division were winter trained (atleast in theory) and made very strong defences in the motti’s they were encircled, most of them couldnt be cleared before peace finally arrived 13.3.1940.
