This mod includes sensors and weapon systems designed to showcase the combat capabilities of 2010 and 2020-era combat aircraft. Applying them jointly with the vanilla game content from the Cold War era may diminish the balance of gameplay. Use with caution.

The term "special mission aircraft (SMA)" is a reference to specially modified aerial combat platforms in the operational order of the PLAAF and the Naval Aviation Force of the PLAN. These platforms are tailored for roles such as airborne early warning and control (AEW&C), electronic warfare (EW), electronic reconnaissance (ER), anti-submarine warfare (ASW) patrols, and other specialized tasks. Such platforms require medium or large military transport aircraft as baseline airframes, which are then retrofitted with dedicated avionics suites. From the 1980s to the early 21st century, the only medium transport aircraft in China that could be mass-produced without any technical constraints was the Y-8, a domestically manufactured variant of the Soviet An-12 transport aircraft. Consequently, the Y-8 and its successor, the Y-9, became the sole platforms for SMAs in service with the PLAAF and PLAN.
Nevertheless, the Y-8 transport platform was plagued by numerous limitations. Its WJ-6 turboprop engines were derived from the Soviet Ivchenko AI-20 designed in the late 1950s, suffering from insufficient power output and low fuel efficiency. Furthermore, the integration of specialized avionics on SMAs reduced the internal fuel capacity, resulting in severely restricted operational radius and loiter time. The Y-8 inherited the high-aspect-ratio wings from the Soviet An-12, which ensured favorable high-altitude, high-speed flight performance but exhibited poor anti-icing characteristics. Even a small amount of wing ice accumulation could trigger severe degradation of flight handling qualities and even stall incidents. Meanwhile, this wing design also led to a decline in flight handling qualities during low-altitude, low-speed flight, significantly reducing the flight safety margin of SMAs equipped with various avionics systems when operating at low altitude and speed.
To mitigate these deficiencies, Shaanxi Aircraft Industry Group Corporation under Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) developed the Y-8 Category III platform, which was powered by the 3,800 kW WJ-6C turboprop engines, achieving improved fuel efficiency. Building on this platform, the Y-9 was developed with a fly-by-wire (FBW) control system to improve handling qualities, increased internal fuel tank capacity, and integrated wing anti-icing equipment. Although loiter time and combat radius remained constrained, the flight safety margins and handling qualities were significantly improved. Over nearly 30 years of development, the Y-8 and Y-9 have spawned a vast array of dedicated aerial combat platforms, including AEW aircraft, electronic reconnaissance aircraft, electronic jamming aircraft, communication and command aircraft, maritime patrol aircraft, psychological operations aircraft, and medical transport aircraft. These platforms stand as the mainstay of the PLAAF and PLAN in high-tech combat domains.
