Description:
What This Mod Does
  • This is designed to run as part of my ongoing Side Quest vanilla+ overhaul for Kenshi. However, unlike other components that I merge into Side Quest wholesale, I am keeping this separate because people have their own lighting preferences.
  • Adjusts sunrise to 06:00 and sunset 20:00, while also adjusting the venge beams accordingly.
  • Significantly tweaks light exposure max and mins to change the feel of lighting during day, night, and weather events.
  • Adjusts darkness at night time to be far more realistic.
  • New grimier, post-apocalyptic ambientmap overlay in place for richer shadows and ambient tone lighting.

Lighting makes a big difference to me, especially fo Kenshi. While our tools are limited, I’ve tweaked and tweaked until I found a combination that met my demands for retaining the gorgeous look and feel of Kenshi while also making nighttime realistically dark without unrealistically pitch black.

I actually really love how standing out on a sand dune at night feels like you’re really there, while retaining some visibility as would be the reality in a desert at night.

I’ve tried every other lighting and shadow mod I could find out there, and none of them achieved some of the vibrance of Mood Shadows while also having sufficiently realistic darker nights. Shadows and Dust finally does this for me.

Key Inspiration and Thanks
  • crunk aint dead for the Mood Shadows inspiration for this, and advice along the way.

What is "Side Quest"?
  • Side Quest – Vanilla Plus Overhaul
  • This vanilla-friendly mod is designed to add, edit, and build out many different components of the Kenshi experience while remaining as compatible and close to the original vanilla experience as possible. Generally nothing game-breaking, major edits to primary towns or cities, or drastic world state changes.
  • The idea is that you could generally run this alongside loads of other mods and still have a compatible experience, just as Anrhaa includes it in his 700+ MEGA Kaizo/Vanilla+ Modpack.
  • Thousands of lore-friendly tweaks to existing weapons, armour, and textures; additions of weapons from the developer cutting room floor (but left in the files).
  • All done while balancing additions to not cause bloat or over-saturation of too many changes at once to a particular faction, group, or area of the game.
  • Contains all individual components below plus many more changes, fixes, and tweaks while remaining as vanilla-friendly and compatible as possible.

Individual Components

This is all done as a love letter to Kenshi, and a hefty clap on the back of gratitude to the modders above and all others that paved the way to make the Kenshi experience better for everyone.
