Blaze’s Kammerlader 1852 – A piece of history.

The wind up here cuts deeper than the cold we’re used to in Oslo. We’re patrolling an old coastal defense line, one of those places where the German concrete from World War II still stains our natural landscape, like scars that refuse to disappear under the snow.

Everything here smells of rust and cement dust.

As we inspected a collapsed section of a bunker, I saw the glint of metal under a rotting tarp.

You won’t believe it son, I found a Kammerlader.

You have to see it to believe it. It’s an infantry model, probably from around 1850. The wood is dark with age, but the mechanism is somewhat operable, the crank that opens the chamber is very unique. It’s heavy, robust, a piece of engineering from when Norway was just beginning to assert its own military identity.

I wonder how it ended up here, in this hole from the 40’s. Maybe it belonged to some grandfather who, when the invasion began, didn’t have a weapon of the time. Perhaps he hid it here when he ran out of ammunition, hoping to return someday, but unfortunately never did.

Holding this rifle is holding the history of our courage. It reminds me that technology changes — today I carry a 416, perhaps tomorrow you will carry something else, but the spirit of the one who holds a weapon, the desire to protect what we love, that is immutable.

I will do my best to take it home, but I wanted to tell you first.

Remember that story isn’t just in your school books; it’s sleeping here, under the ice, or in concrete this time, waiting to be awakened.
