十世纪的群雄鏖战渐渐沉寂，华夏大地再度陷入南北对峙的状态。北宋承继五代，意欲乘灭北汉之余威挥师北讨，收复燕云，却于高梁河之役惨遭败绩，锐气渐消；辽国远兼朔漠，窥伺中原，早有君主华夷之志，然而构兵多年亦不能吞噬河北。在宋辽两国因漫长的缠斗精疲力竭之际，党项首领李继迁崛起银夏，定霸西北，逐渐拥有了能够和这两个帝国抗衡的力量。
By the end of 10th Century, balance of power shrouded China. Claiming to be the rightful heir of Central Plain Dynasties, Northern Song Dynasty struggled to take back the lost territories in the North yet failed after the defeat in Battle of Gaoliang River. In the meantime, the Sinolized Khitan Liao Dynasty was also exhausted in the war. With both empires unable to conquer each other in a short period of time, the prolonged war provided opportunities for other minor regimes to rise. Cunning Tangut leader Li Jiqian, the founding ancestor of Xi Xia Kingdom, swiftly controlled the Northwest, becoming a potential competitor for both empires.
