Europe 1945 – Alternate Revamped
Bullets and Bloodshed.
in this timeline, the republicans manage to win the Spanish civil war, with much more support from France, and with the help of soviet high command actually making the right choices, instead of throwing troops at heavily fortified positions and using it as propaganda. with that, a new anti-axis state was formed on the continent. when the invasion of Poland began, the Spanish attempted to stay neutral to recover from their inner conflict, but the Reich and Italy, with their spy agencies, found out that the Spanish allowed the allies to transport supplies to the front (the British/French threatened them into compliance). in retaliation, Italy and Germany declared war on them. the French still fell to German blitzkrieg tactics, but put up much more of a fight with direct Spanish support. after the fall of France, the Italians occupied the Balearic isles and made landings on Catalonia and Valencia. the Germans began Assaulting spanish positions, and with the spanish military still recovering from their recent civil war, the axis has no problem against Spaniard forces. Portugal, being aligned with the allies, was invaded as well to secure fascist influence over the Iberian Peninsula. in the east, Sweden was swiftly invaded and occupied after being believed to be secretly signing agreements with the allies, though these assumptions weren’t entirely true; it was just used as an excuse to invade for full control over its iron exports. in the Balkans, Yugoslavia joined the axis and managed to hold itself together. Croatian fascist Separatists settled down a bit and axis support was shoveled in to crack down on any large scale protests, as well as killing off any political enemies like the communists. as operation Barbarossa began, the axis tried to get the Turks to side with them, though this failed, and the axis began an invasion at near the same time the soviet offensive began, this time with the Italians taking on the bulk of the fight. the axis would make it much further into the Baltics, Ukraine, and Russia with their more secure control over mainland europe, but would eventually falter just as they did in our own timeline, this time due to over extending of military units to keep the front in tact. Iberia was Practically undefended as most axis troops were focused on Turkey and the USSR. partisans and resistance swayed the war in the allies favor, and after the bombings of pearl harbor, it was essentially over for the axis.
