Fern is one of the main deuteragonists of the manga, "Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End" (also known as Sousou no Frieren) started in 2020 that got an anime adaptation in 2023. She’s a post-war orphan that was trained in magic under the elvan mage from a legendary party of heroes, Frieren that resolved said war and now accompanies her on an adventure to Heaven to reacquaint with an old friend. Fern was told by her master to use the most basic spells in combat, but unlike the legendary mage, Fern is capable of mana management like no other: casting these basic spells at rapid rates none can compete with and conceal her mana reserves near completely

[As I Was Taught]
Fern only uses the essentials. Her attacks are various streaks & bursts of magic from her staff, making her have some odd disjoints. They aren’t complex, but they get the job done

[Mana]
Ironically, for being a mage, Fern doesnโ€™t use many spells, but she can use them to barrage enemies via her large Mana reserve. Various moves utilize this resource, but running low on Mana drastically reduces her options

[Float Jump]
Fern’s double jump speed is inverted, making her dip down before accelerating for it. This allows her to do Double Jump canceled Aerials

[Dash Attack]
Windup and lunge forward with magic. Unlike other Grounded Normals, U-Special can be activated after startup regardless of landing a hit. This move goes off ledges

[Forward-Tilt]
A horizontal staff swing of magic followed up by a flurry of sparks. If the swing hits an enemy, the sparks will track to the hit enemy’s position. The spark’s direction can be altered based on the direction inputted. Using the sparks take Mana

[Up-Tilt]
An uppercut of magic followed by a flurry of sparks. If the uppercut hits an enemy, the sparks will track to the hit enemy’s position. The spark’s direction can be altered based on the direction inputted. Using the sparks take Mana

[Back-Air]
Swift swipe of magic with the staff in an arc. This turns Fern around

[Forward-Strong]
Blast magic in front as a concentrated beam. Charging this increases its range, but consumes large amounts of Mana. This can be used in the air

[Neutral-Special – (Mana Conceal)]
Toggle a state that makes her weight lighter, increases gravity & trades her Float Jump for a normal one. In return, Fern has increased air movement, and Mana regeneration. Exit this state when toggled again or when using any other Special. Using this also halts Float Magic

[Forward-Special – (Zoltrak)]
Fire a rapid spray of magic forward while draining Mana as long as Special is held. Fern is able to walk & jump while using this

[Down-Special – (Defensive Magic)]
Raise a barrier to knockback enemies a great distance. If held on startup, the barrier persists – draining Mana. Any move can be used while this is active, but she’s unable to Dash properly. If the barrier is hit while it persists, it expands to damage enemies, but takes Mana. Fern also has Soft Armor while the barrier is up that negates weaker attacks. The barrier can be toggled off if inputted again.

[Up-Special – (Float Magic)]
Toggle a state where Fern can fly freely in any direction, draining Mana. Any move can be used while this is active and can even fly with Defensive Magic active. Being hit disables this state. This can also be toggled on hit for Grounded Normals & whenever for Aerial Normals

Never heard of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End? Well you’re hearing about it now

You can stack all these modifiers till your heart’s content, yet Mana economy says otherwise

Technically, every Normal is just Zoltrak, but used in different ways. It’s dumb I know, but let me have this ok

Canonically, Fern has WAAAAY more Mana than this. For the sake of balancing, it’s been nerfed…by a lot…

I put a Rushdown, Zoner, Fastfaller, and Floaty all into one character. "What could possibly go wrong" – That one old guy from Arzette

The special Double Jump is probably a bad idea. I just got hit by F-Air 4 times already

F-Strong is a gimmick move. If you full charge it and miss, that’s your deficit buddy

If you don’t end up winning, start zoning. Nothing is stopping you from doing so besides the arbitrary meter at the bottom of your screen

Don’t expect any major balances or changes. There may be bug fixes here and there, but that’s just about it

No demons were harmed in the making of this character
