Stat Decay
[Why I made this]
I grew tired of a world filled with demigod-like stat monsters.
This mod aims to curb runaway stat inflation by applying the concept that, as characters age, their abilities gradually decline—but they grow wiser in return.
[What This Mod Does]
1. All characters aged 30 and above have a chance each year to gain the “Frailty” modifier (-1 stat, +2% lifestyle experience).
2. The chance is very low at a young age, but it steadily increases over time, becoming almost guaranteed every year after around age 70.
3. Characters afflicted with the following diseases have a high chance of gaining the Frailty modifier regardless of age, representing lasting aftereffects of illness: Bloody Flux, Cancer, Holy Fire, Measles, Pneumonia, Smallpox, Typhus
4. Stat decay begins for stats of 20 or higher, and to avoid excessive harshness, stats of 9 or lower are not affected.
5. Highest stat is 40 or higher, chances are higher.
6. Prowess doesn’t affected by this mod.
[TL;DR]
At launch, Crusader Kings III had fairly solid stat balance. However, after many updates and DLCs, the game has shifted into a structure where simply living long enough turns characters into demigods.
Digging through the game files reveals that “Extremely skillful” is defined at a stat value of 20, and “Monumentally skillful” at 25—with no tiers beyond that. Despite this, after just a few decades, demigod-tier characters become overwhelmingly common.
This kind of stat inflation is unhealthy for game balance. For example, when too many characters have extremely high Diplomacy, mutual opinions trend overwhelmingly positive, making the world feel unnaturally peaceful and removing much of the game’s tension.
This mod was created to address that issue. However, simply applying debuffs can feel unfair, so the balance is adjusted by pairing stat decay with a modest boost to lifestyle experience, representing wisdom gained with age.
[Future plan]
Balance adjustments and overall polish.
