USS-X MIDWAY (CVB-41) 1945
The USS Midway is a large armored aircraft carrier built by the US Navy in the late World War II. It has undergone two major renovations in history, which ultimately enabled it to serve from the end of World War II until it was retired in the 1990s. It was preserved as a museum ship in 2004 and is a veritable "three-generation veteran" of the US Navy.
As the successor model of the Essex-class aircraft carrier, the USS Midway is the first US aircraft carrier equipped with an armored flight deck. The flight deck is fully protected by 3-inch thick armor. At the same time, in order to resist the 203mm naval guns from the Japanese heavy cruisers, the Midway is equipped with the thickest 193mm armor belt in the history of aircraft carriers. The Midway also has more anti-torpedo protection, and the unconventional layout of the propulsion system also makes this battleship difficult to sink in actual combat.
The Midway is designed to carry 136 aircraft, including 64 F4U Corsair fighters and the same number of SB2C Helldiver fighters and eight Hellcat night fighters. It is also equipped with the most unique anti-aircraft weapons-18 127mm 54-caliber MK.16 naval guns installed in the side single gun mounts, and assisted by a large number of Bofors 40mm guns and Oerlikon 20mm guns, which makes her have quite powerful anti-aircraft firepower.
However, when this behemoth was finally built, World War II had already passed for a month. The rapid development of jet aircraft meant that she and her sister ships were basically obsolete, and their subsequent service in the US Navy required a lot of money and effort. Finally, CVB-42 Franklin D. Roosevelt was retired in 1977, while CVB-41 Midway and CVB-43 Coral Island were transformed several times and served until 1992. Together with the Forrestal-class aircraft carrier and Kitty Hawk-class aircraft carrier, they constituted the third generation of conventional-powered aircraft carriers in the United States after the war.
