GE EP-5 – New Haven & Successors
This mod adds 8 versions of the GE class EP-5 engine to the game. These are repaints of the Transport Fever generic EP-5.
In 1955, General Electric built 10 class EP-5 engines for the New York, New Haven & Hartford railroad (or ‘New Haven’ for short). They were for use on passenger trains running between New York City and Hartford, Connecticut.
In 1954, Patrick B. McGinnis won a proxy fight to take over control of the New Haven. Afterwards, he initiated a company make over that gave us the ‘McGinnis’ paint scheme. The EP-5 had already been ordered, but was still being built. So it ended up being one of the first to carry the new paint scheme. As a test, two engines were painted in the new scheme. A yellow version and a red version. Mrs McGinnis picked the red version. So all engines were painted in the red ‘McGinnis’ scheme and the yellow scheme was never used in production.
The EP-5’s were sometimes called ‘Jets’ due to the roaring sound made by their main blowers. One problem with the units was the crowded arrangement of components which could cause overheating and catch fire. This was due to poor ventilation and the weight restriction imposed on the design by the New York Central’s Park Avenue steel viaduct.
When the New Haven merged with the Penn central in 1969, the EP-5’s were reclassified as E-40’s and renumbered. For a time the units ran with their New Haven paint scheme, but with Penn Central numbers. Eventually they would be repainted in Penn Central black with the large ‘PC’ logo.
In May 1973 all E-40’s were banned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority after PC #4971 caught fire in the Park Avenue Tunnel. All units went into dead storage. Two units (#4973 and #4977) were rebuilt for freight service.
After the Penn Central was absorbed into Conrail in 1976, the E-40’s continued in service still wearing their Penn Central colors. However, within a year they were retired. All EP-5 / E-40’s were eventually scrapped in 1979.

- This mod adds new vehicles to the game without altering anything in the game.
- Custom colors and logos have been disabled.
- Two versions I included just for fun/completeness: 1955 yellow version is real, but never used in active service. 1976 Conrail is the same as the previous Penn Central because Conrail never repainted the units.
- Years for each paint scheme is an estimate based on my research.
- Due to model issue, number on side of nose appears mirrored on one side.
