History

HMS Belfast (C35) was the second ship of the Edinburgh subclass of light cruisers in the Royal Navy. The ship was named after the city of Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. Her construction began in 1936, she was launched in 1938, and commissioned in August 1939. With a standard displacement of 10,635 tons and a full load displacement of 13,175 tons, she was armed with four triple 152 mm (6-inch) main gun turrets. As part of the third and final batch of the Town-class cruisers, she was one of the largest light cruisers ever built for the Royal Navy.

Although severely damaged by a German magnetic mine in November 1939, which necessitated extensive repairs, she returned to service and achieved a distinguished combat record. Her wartime service included operations on the Arctic convoys, participation in the battle that resulted in the sinking of the German battlecruiser Scharnhorst, involvement in Operation Tungsten against the battleship Tirpitz, and providing naval gunfire support during the Normandy landings. After an anti-aircraft upgrade in 1945, she was deployed to the Far East and later saw action in the Korean War.

The ship underwent a major modernization refit in the late 1950s, which cost approximately £5.5 million and included the replacement of her anti-aircraft armament, reconstruction of the bridge, and the addition of Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical protection facilities. She was decommissioned in 1963. In 1971, she was preserved for the nation as a museum ship, becoming the second warship in the UK to be saved for public display. Today, HMS Belfast is part of the Imperial War Museum and is permanently moored on the River Thames in London, near Tower Bridge.
