[B] RN Affondatore ‘1866
The ironclad ship Affondatore was a ramming ship commissioned into the Italian Royal Navy in 1866. Built by Millwall in London, it was laid down in 1863 and, although unfinished, was purchased and joined the newly established Italian Navy. The ship was named Affondatore. Affondatore was equipped with two 9-inch guns and a 5-inch waterline armor belt. When Affondatore arrived at Lissa Island, the battle broke out in July 1866. Under the orders of Admiral Carlo di Persano, Affondatore replaced the Re d’Italia as the flagship, but this transfer caused confusion in command, and ultimately Italy ended up on the losing end. Affondatore sank in a storm in August, but was refloated and rebuilt between 1867 and 1873, with its sails removed. From 1883 to 1885, the ship was refitted with two 10-inch guns and secondary guns, and underwent a significant reconstruction of its superstructure, giving it an appearance almost akin to a pre-dreadnought battleship. Affondatore was the longest-lived ship to have participated in the Battle of Lissa, and it was honorably decommissioned in 1907, with dismantling taking place around 1914.
This ship is based on its condition in 1866.
