Description:

The Hotel Lunik in Eisenhüttenstadt.

Finished in 1963 and located in the center of Eisenhüttenstadt (formerly Stalinstadt), it served as the architectural gateway to the main shopping boulevard of the GDR’s first planned city.

The front facade originally featured blue and yellow tiles as well as neon lights that promoted the hotel and its various facilities. However, these embellishments had become heavily weathered by the 1970s and were eventually removed, with the exception of the logo and name.

The Lunik was part of a larger ensemble of buildings that included an adjacent restaurant and a beauty salon, which connected the building with a nearby apartment block. The restaurant is part of this mod, the salon is not. Because of a lack of good photos and Google Street View, I took some liberties with the restaurant design. It looks like it extends quite far into the backyard on Google Maps, but I couldn’t verify this, so I kept the model to a reasonable size.
