Description:

Textilkaufhaus, Kaufhaus Magnet, Lindenzentrum – this shopping mall in the center of Eisenhüttenstadt (formerly Stalinstadt) has had several names since its construction in 1960.

It is the counterpart to the Hotel Lunik on the opposite side of the road. Together, they serve as the gateway to the city’s main shopping boulevard, the Lindenallee (formerly Leninallee).

Built in a similar style to the Lunik although with very different windows, the Textilkaufhaus originally had the same yellow and blue tiles. They were removed from both buildings in the 1970s.

While the Lunik’s facade remained blank, the Textilkaufhaus’ tiles were replaced with the red paint that is still visible today. It was also around that time that the Textilkaufhaus was transferred to the Kaufhaus Magnet chain.

Because of its huge mosaic on the back (‘Peacetime Production’ by Walter Womacka), it is one of the most well-known buildings in Eisenhüttenstadt. Womacka’s mosaic, created in 64, replaced the original ‘Steelworker’ painting by Johannes Hansky.
