Nobody is That Popular – Opinion Rebalance
A script mod that adjusts the general opinion modifier for character who are unrealistically popular (e.g., complete strangers have +100 opinion of them).
There are many ways in the game to gain positive opinion modifiers (diplomacy, virtues, modifiers from events, artifacts, court) and even though most of them are small enough not to adversely affect gameplay, they do stack, which often leads to unrealistic scenarios by the late game, e.g., complete strangers on a different continent having +100 opinion of the player’s character. This breaks the game in a myriad way, and removes almost all challenge from it.
This mod aims to fix this issue by adding a negative general opinion modifier to characters who are "too popular". Popularity is determined by taking the average opinion of a large number of unrelated characters and checking whether it exceeds a reasonable threshold (+30 by default). The acts like a soft cap on general opinion, which means positive opinion modifiers will have a diminishing effect above this threshold, e.g., if complete strangers had (on average) a +50 opinion of a character, now they will only have +40. If they had +100, now they will only have +55.
To keep the game challenging, this modifier is not applied to conquerors and great khans.
Compatible with essentially all mods, it can be put anywhere in the load order.
It is safe to add this mod to an existing game, but I recommend making a backup save. To remove the mod enact the decision to disable it (see screenshot). The mod can be re-enabled at any time with the same decision.
This mod is part of my More Late Game Drama & Challenge collection.
The mod is in English, but Chinese translation is available here .
I have tested this with my mod list and without mods, but there might still be bugs. If you encounter any, please post a comment.
