Description:

This mod adds Cretan Archers to the Roman roster in the Caesar in Gaul Campaign. It is an improved version of a much more simple mod I made many years ago.

The Cretan Archer unit is modified from the vanilla into a period-authentic version, with a new unit card and skin featuring Roman armour and weapons. Armour and melee stats are slightly improved, although not to the point of being overpowered – most melee infantry and cavalry units will still easily defeat them in melee. Strangely, the shield on the backs of the archers was just a prop in the vanilla version – I created a new animation set, so the archers will now fight with sword and shield in melee.

While it is of course just good fun to mow down unarmoured barbarians with an elite archer unit, in this case it is also grounded in history, since Caesar did indeed have a detachment of Cretan Archers with him on his campaign in Gaul. Yes, it was unfair for the Gauls in real life too.

The unit is available in custom battles and in the campaign is recruitable in Rome’s starting regions through the Auxiliary building chain.
