Ústí nad Labem má dnes nevalnou pověst, nicméně tomu tak nebylo vždy. Původní osada existovala na soutoku řek Labe a Bíliny nejspíše už v 10. století. Z tohoto regionu taktéž pravděpodobně pocházel bájný zakladatel českého rodu Přemyslovců, Přemysl Oráč. Region byl celou historii územím Čechů i Němců. Probíhal zde čilý obchod a i z toho důvodu zde vznikl hrad známý jako Střekov. Střekovský hrad sloužil jako celnice pro proplouvající obchodní lodě po Labi. V rámci dějin bylo město několikrát dobyto, avšak v 19. století došlo k bleskovému rozvoji díky nalezištím uhlí. Kvůli uhelným lomům byla zbořena část městských hradeb, což prospělo k dalšímu růstu města. Během tohoto století bylo město napojeno na železnici, byly vybudovány dva přístavy a klíčový se zde stal chemický průmysl. Ke konci století bylo město 5. největším městem Zemí koruny české. 20. století se však městu stalo osudným. V meziválečném období došlo k radikalizaci německého obyvatelstva, během 2. Světové války došlo k několika bombardování, které se stalo osudným velké části historického centra. V období socialismu neexistovaly plány na renovaci zpustošeného a vylidněného města. Místo toho zde proběhla masivní industrializace a budování sídlišť na okolních kopcích. Ruiny historického města chátraly a její zbytky se začali renovovat až v 21. století. Dnes region trpí vysokou nezaměstnaností, nízkou životní úrovní a postupným chátráním.

Map of the city of Ústí nad Labem and surrounding area
Ústí nad Labem has a bad reputation today, but this was not always the case. The original settlement existed at the confluence of the Elbe and Bílina rivers, most likely as early as the 10th century. The legendary founder of the Czech Přemyslid dynasty, Přemysl Oráč, also probably came from this region. The region has been the territory of both Czechs and Germans throughout history. There was lively trade here, and for this reason a castle known as Střekov was built here. Střekov Castle served as a customs house for merchant ships sailing along the Elbe. Throughout history, the city was conquered several times, but in the 19th century it experienced rapid development thanks to coal deposits. Part of the city walls were demolished due to coal mines, which benefited the further growth of the city. During this century, the city was connected to the railway, two ports were built, and the chemical industry became key here. By the end of the century, the city was the 5th largest city in the Bohemia. However, the 20th century was fateful for the city. In the interwar period, the German population was radicalized, and during World War II, several bombings occurred, which became fatal for a large part of the historic center. During the socialist period, there were no plans to renovate the devastated and depopulated city. Instead, massive industrialization and the construction of housing estates on the surrounding hills took place. The ruins of the historic city fell into disrepair, and its remains began to be renovated only in the 21st century. Today, the region suffers from high unemployment, low living standards, and gradual decay.
