THE SITUATION
The world is coming apart. Warsaw Pact armoured divisions are pouring through the Fulda Gap. Soviet forces have seized Iceland and captured Keflavik Air Base, threatening NATO’s North Atlantic supply lines. A communist coup in the Philippines has forced the United States to abandon Subic Bay Naval Station and Clark Air Base, eliminating its primary logistics and repair hub in the Western Pacific. Communist forces are massing just across the US southern border in Mexico. And in the Panama Canal’s Gatun Locks, a cargo ship — possibly linked to Soviet intelligence — detonates a concealed tactical nuclear device, destroying the locks and physically severing the US Atlantic and Pacific fleets from one another.
The United States is fighting on every front. And losing ground on most of them.
Into this chaos, Admiral Volsky leads a Soviet carrier battle group into the Central Pacific. Centred on the Orel-class supercarrier Tbilisi and the Kirov-class battlecruiser Frunze, with a full amphibious assault element embarked, his objective is Midway Atoll — the same patch of coral that changed the course of the Pacific War forty-two years earlier. Seize Midway, and Soviet bombers can range as far as Hawaii and the US West Coast.
YOUR MISSION
You are in command of Task Force Seven Two, built around USS Enterprise (CVN-65) — the Grey Ghost, the most storied carrier in the United States Navy. Your escorts have been scraped together from whatever Pacific Fleet assets remain available. There is no reinforcement coming. There is no fallback position.
The Cobra Dane radar on Shemya Island has been destroyed. You are blind beyond your own sensor envelope. The enemy knows this.
Hold Midway. Destroy the Tbilisi. Destroy the Frunze. Do not lose Enterprise.
