ARA General Belgrano: Quick Facts
Background
Origin: Originally the USS Phoenix, a US light cruiser that survived the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
Acquisition: Purchased by Argentina in 1951 and renamed General Belgrano in 1955.
Technical Profile
Armament: Equipped with 15 massive 6-inch (152 mm) main guns and later fitted with Sea Cat missiles.
Capacity: Carried a crew of over 1,100 sailors.
Performance: A high-speed vessel capable of 32.5 knots.
The Sinking (May 2, 1982)
The Incident: During the Falklands War, the British nuclear submarine HMS Conqueror fired two torpedoes at the cruiser.
The Location: The ship was outside the UK’s "Total Exclusion Zone" and heading away from the islands when hit.
Casualties: 323 crew members died, accounting for nearly half of Argentina’s total war losses.
Legacy
Strategic Impact: Following the sinking, the Argentine Navy withdrew its fleet to port, leaving the seas to the British Royal Navy.
Historical Milestone: It remains the only ship ever sunk in action by a nuclear-powered submarine.
