Notes on My Approach

This pack is drawn from a selective review of V’s dialogue from Cyberpunk 2077 (NOT including the Phantom Liberty DLC. Consensus is the performance & writing for the DLC were a bit uneven).

Unfortunately, the raw voicebank data from Cyberpunk is organized in a way that makes hunting through the 15+ hours of her dialogue transcripts very tricky, even with thorough transcription tools and my 200+ hours experience with the source material. Critically, there’s no way to easily audit all the various combat barks from any particular action scene because the way the files were ordered does not group all types of dialogue chronologically or predictably.

The other wrinkle: Many players would agree the writing of V’s character and dialogue left a lot to be desired because it was trying to have the protagonist be everything to everybody who might step into her shoes: verbose hard-boiled neo-noir detective, cynical mercenary, streetwise punk, corpo agent….the list goes on. Finding lines that felt consistent, punchy, and appropriate for XCom is open to interpretation.

With all that in mind, I’d hesitate to call this pack the ‘definitive’ V – at least not yet.

Even though the character comes in a few different flavors that don’t always combine well, this pack should definitely feel recognizable and appropriate to XCom. I made pains to avoid the cringey lines and lean into what made Cherami Leigh’s V sound likable, funny, and capable. She’s still a grouchy smartass and a bit unpredictable – willing to throw shade at unlikely moments – and at unlikely targets.

I may update this pack in the future. I hope you’ll enjoy it, and I welcome any feedback or assists identifying good lines in the comments.
