Working Knowledge – Lootable Skill Documents
That filing cabinet isn’t worthless. Somewhere between the expense reports and the insurance forms is a copy of the OSHA 1910 Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Or an Appalacian Folk Pottery Pamphlet. Or a Police Academy Handgun Manual.
Working Knowledge adds 372 lootable workplace documents to Project Zomboid — SOPs, reference cards, field guides, training manuals — found in contextually appropriate containers throughout Knox County. Read one, and your character picks up a small amount of practical experience in the relevant skill. Each document can only be read once.
Where to find them:
Documents turn up rarely in generic filing cabinets and office desks. Dedicated profession containers — police filing cabinets, fire station storage, gun store counters, welding shops, farm tool cabinets, and more — reward targeted searching with higher find rates and more relevant material.
This is the kind of incidental knowledge that was already sitting in these buildings before everything went wrong.
Two options are available under Working Knowledge in the Sandbox settings. To access them: when starting a new game, look for the Working Knowledge section in the Sandbox tab. In an existing save, open the Escape menu → Sandbox.
Document Spawn Rate — Controls how often documents appear in loot containers. Ranges from Very Rare (0.25×) to Abundant (4×); default is Normal. Note that loot is generated when a container is first opened, so changing this setting mid-save only affects areas you haven’t visited yet.
XP Grant — The flat amount of XP awarded when a document is read for the first time. Default is 50. Set to 0 to disable XP entirely while keeping documents as collectibles.
Multiplayer-compatible. Build 42 only.
