Description:
INS Viraat (Ex HMS Hermes) MOD

Mod Number: 3621888472

This mod adds the Indian Navy’s INS Viraat light aircraft carrier (Ex HMS Hermes of Falklands/Malvinas War fame) in her late Cold War configuration (circa 1988).

INS Viraat (Giant in Sanskrit) was a Centaur-class light aircraft carrier of the Indian Navy. The ship was completed and commissioned in 1959 as the Royal Navy’s HMS Hermes, and decommissioned in 1984. She was sold to India in 1987. Before her delivery to India she undertook an extensive refit at Devonport Dockyard. INS Viraat received a new Dutch radar suite (manufactured under licence by the Indian company Bharat Electronics). Her armament was changed, the Sea Cat launchers being replaced by 2 × 40 mm Bofors AA guns and 2 × AK-230 CIWS. She served in the Indian Navy for almost 30 years operating a squadron of BAE Sea Harrier FRS.51 together with Sea King Mk42 helos.

This is reskin + kitbash of HMS Centaur featured in the fantastic Royal Navy Mod Pack.

REQUIREMENTS:

The following mods are required and need to be loaded in the following order in the Mod Manager to work properly:

  • 1st: The Royal Navy Mod Pack
  • Westland Sea King Mk42 and Mk45 MOD
  • Sea Harrier FRS.51 MOD
  • and last in order the present mod: INS Viraat (Ex HMS Hermes) MOD

Special Thanks and Credits

This mod is basicaly a modification of the Centaur-class assets of the Royal Navy Mod Pack (it’s a mod of a mod ;)). So, the large majority of the credits should go to the Royal Navy Mod Pack team:

  • Longbow
  • Brother Munro
  • mrchiaow
  • petrouvis01
  • Peter Garrett
  • skyblazer

Thanks again to them for allowing me to use some of their assets.

Design Notes

The main changes when compared to HMS Hermes include a slight retexturing of the flight deck (the flight deck markings of INS Viraat were a little different those of HMS Hermes) and of the hull and superstructures, with some traces of rust and dirt added (INS Viraat was already an old lady by 1988). I did some kitbashing work to replace the Sea Cat launchers by AK230 CIWS and Bofors Guns. I replaced the radars and, of course, the air group by 16 x Sea Harrier FRS.51 and 4 x Westland Sea King Mk42 and added a deck park of 3 Sea Harriers (purely decorative).
Known bug: When taking-off the Harriers just go right through the ski-jump. Its a current limitation of the game’s flight deck mechanics.

Important (about mods and mods use):

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that mods can break early access games.
Jane Austen

This mod has been tested and is running perfectly on my computer (i7-11800H @ 2.30 Ghz – 16 GB RAM – NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050) with no other mod enabled. However, since they are as many computer configurations than computer users, it’s unfortunately impossible to guarantee it will work on yours.
Be aware that by installing mods for Sea Power, you are modifying your game experience from the original intended product which is still, at this mod’s release date, in EARLY ACCESS. Therefore, later game updates/patches may cause this mod to be deprecated. Although it is unlikely, the presence of other enabled mods might cause conflicts, and the more enable mods on your computer, the greater the chance of conflict. So, to sum it up, USE MODS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
If you wish to clean uninstal this mod make sure to follow these steps: 1) Uncheck this mod in the mod manager. 2) Click on Accept. 3) Unsubscribe. Then make sure the mod’s file is no longer in the C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappsworkshopcontent1286220 folder.
