Mondragón Modell 1917 「Commission」
The FliegerGewehr Model 1917 is a Swiss adaptation of the Mexican Mondragón M1908, one of the earliest self-loading rifles ever adopted by any military. Born from a stock of roughly 50 surplus M1908 rifles that Germany had declined to purchase, Switzerland repurposed these leftover rifles in 1917 for experimental aviation trials conducted by both the Swiss Army and its air service. The rifles were modified from the original design to chamber the 7.5×55mm Swiss cartridge, replacing the fixed 10-round magazine with a slender 12-round single-stack detachable box magazine. Designed for use by airborne troops in an era before aircraft-mounted machine guns were widespread, the Mondragón’s semi-automatic capability gave pilots and observers a decisive edge over adversaries armed with bolt-action rifles. Its gas-operated rotating bolt design was considered highly unconventional for its time, and a unique switch on the charging handle even allowed the rifle to revert to straight-pull bolt-action operation when needed. Though only ever a trial design produced in strictly limited numbers, the FliegerGewehr Model 1917 stands as a landmark piece of firearms history, representing one of the earliest purpose-adapted semi-automatic rifles fielded for aerial combat before synchronized machine guns rendered it obsolete.
