"Aperture Science Military Androids, nicknamed "robogrunts" by the Pentagon, were the first biped combat robots to be used in the field by US armed forces, being introduced in to active service by both the Army and USMC in 1994. They are able to wield any conventional firearms with high accuracy and effectiveness in addition to high mobility and endurance. Robogrunts were initially created as high tech farm equipment to replace farmhands on plantations, however due to controversy surrounding Apertures earlier publically sold robot design, sentry turret aimed at guarding sleeping infants, they were forced to be redesigned for combat. Remnants of their original intended purpose still remain in their design in form of damaged robogrunts often "bleeding" red oil like biofuel that gets often mistaken for blood. Robogrunts look notably different from other Aperture tech due to bulky armor plating and rubber join protection. While being capable of independent thought and problem solving, robogrunts are purposefully limited to being effectively just drones controlled by commanders or engineers of the unit(s) they are being used by due to safety concerns regarding implications of fully autonomous AI by Pentagon. Similar to the military grade sentry turrets also manufactured by Aperture, robogrunts are treated as experimental military equipment meant for bolsteting human combatants and not as full replacement for them. They are primarily used for scouting and for breaking enemy lines by rushing in the middle of the enemy combatants, often being sent first in to unknown areas to map them out before friendly forces move in. Despite them quickly gaining popularity within USMC especially, robogrunts are still very much experimental. While their armor is completely bulletproof from any conventional rounds below 50cal., their joints remain an easy target for snipers and explosions, with even single explosive being able to instantly and completely disable a robogrunt. Most robogrunts are plain green, but camo versions exist. USMC specifically makes use for dtex camo variants, coming in jungle, urban and dust colors."
