In the Southwestern sector of Festung Königsberg, Soviet forces first had to clear the German defenders in the fields southwest of Kalgen as well as the Gut itself, which was used as a strongpoint. These positions formed the forward line protecting the main road towards Königsberg proper and the flank of Fort Nr. 8 (a 19th century Prussian fort). This line was reinforced with trenches, machine‑gun posts, anti‑tank ditches and PAK. After heavy pressure on April 6, 1945, the Soviets overran the Gut and the village, removing the German flank threat. With Kalgen secured, the assault shifted directly onto Fort Nr. 8, which came under continuous bombardment and close‑range attacks on April 6 and 7, leaving it isolated and the sector’s defenses effectively broken.
