Description:
Brings back storms!

Brings organic storms back. Since 2026.1, weather only ever seems to reach clear, foggy or lightly rainy states — proper storms and heavy seas never arrive on their own, and the forecast never predicts them. This mod restores the storm frequency of 2025.1.1 Patch 4. It’s a community hotfix mod (which I’ll pass on to the devs) until they’re able to resolve the issue in the official build.

Save safety and compatibility

Runtime Harmony patches only — the mod adds nothing to your saves, and saves remain fully loadable if you disable it. Compatible with weather visual/audio mods. If you run a weather overhaul that deliberately manages storm distance, its live settings take precedence while it is enabled.

The bug

Rough seas and thunderstorms come from a roaming "storm cell" that boosts local wind when it drifts within range of your boat (about 240 km). 2026.1 changed how that cell is placed: it now sits roughly 800 km away essentially all the time, so its wind boost almost never engages (about 0.1% of the time, down from about 15% in 2025.1.1 — a ~110x collapse). No nearby cell means no gales, no storm seas, no storm forecasts.

The fix

One small runtime patch re-maps the cell’s placement so its distance distribution exactly matches 2025.1.1. Validated in-game over weeks of telemetry: the boost engages ~15% of the time, you get ~6 storm passes a month lasting ~15 hours each, and seas under a cell build to Beaufort 7. Wind generation, the Beaufort scale, the 2026.1 fog simulation and all other weather changes are left untouched.

Also: repairs storm-blocked saves

Some weather tools and mods write a ‘minimum storm distance’ override that is stored in your save and keeps suppressing storms forever (like the ‘Historical Realism Pack’ mod), even after the tool is removed. On load, this mod clears any such orphaned override (you’ll see one log line when it does). A weather mod that is still installed and managing that setting simply keeps doing so — only leftovers from removed mods are cleared.

Tuning and diagnostics

A config file is created on first run at …AppData/LocalLow/Deep Water Studio/UBOAT/StormFrequencyRestoredConfig.json:
– stormDistanceScale: 1.0 = 2025.1.1 storm frequency (default). Lower = storms more often (0.8 is noticeably stormier), higher = rarer.
– telemetryEnabled: off by default. When on, writes an hourly [SFR-WX] weather line (wind, sea state, storm distance, fog/rain/thunder, position) to output_log.txt — handy if you want to audit your campaign’s weather or report an issue.
Edits apply on the next game start.
