Exercise Jupiter ’88 – Blood in the Water
November 1988. Balearic Sea.
NATO organizes the largest joint naval exercise between Spain and Italy in decades. The objective: test emergency interoperability between two navies that have never operated together under real pressure.
On the flight deck of the Spanish aircraft carrier Dédalo, veteran AV-8A Harrier fighters launch into the Mediterranean. In parallel, the Italian fleet deploys the new aircraft carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi with its helicopter squadrons. The new Spanish carrier Príncipe de Asturias, flagship of a new generation, plays the role of simulated Opposing Force—attacking in complete radio and radar silence.
Everything proceeds according to plan. Until it doesn’t.
Tensions between NATO and the Warsaw Pact have reached critical levels. Disarmament negotiations in Vienna have collapsed. Moscow unilaterally declares "Transit Restriction Zones" in the Mediterranean and positions units of the 5th Soviet Mediterranean Operational Squadron for what they call "monitoring exercises."
The Kremlin makes no secret of its hostility toward Spain’s integration into NATO’s military structure.
While your fleet maneuvers in the Balearic Sea, radar contacts appear. Unexpected. Real Soviet contacts. Not simulated. Submarines. Long-range bombers. A Surface Action Group approaching from the east.
Your training exercise just became a real emergency.
As commander of the Combined Task Force, you must:
- Coordinate defenses between Spanish and Italian forces
- Protect the aircraft carriers under your command at all costs
- Manage naval aviation, ASW helicopters, and surface units with limited resources
- Locate and neutralize Soviet attack submarines
- Withstand waves of strategic bombers armed with anti-ship missiles
- Execute a devastating counterattack against the Soviet fleet
There is no margin for error. The history of naval warfare is in your hands.
