Description:

An alternate history scenario where President Truman gave the go-ahead for Operation Downfall, which was the planned invasion of the Japanese Home Islands. It was originally cancelled after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the Soviet declaration of war on Manchuria. The mod currently only includes Operation Olympic with the invasion of Kyūshū on ‘X-Day’ (1st November 1945).

Feedback on the mod is welcomed and appreciated.

Map: Operation Olympic

Players: US vs. Japan

Start Date: 1st November 1945

Map Scale: 1 Hex ≈ 11 km (0.6 mi) in length.

Unit Scale: 1 Unit ≈ 1 Brigade/Regiment

Time Scale: 1 Turn = 1 Day

Map Orientation: North = Right

Primary Objectives: Any VPs south of the line between Sendai on the West Coast and Tsuno on the Eastern shoreline.

Secondary Objectives: Izumi, Sashiki, Hitoyoshi and Nobeoka. These villages are north of the American objective line and south of the north-south line.

Time Limit: 90 Turns/Days.

Misc. Details: Roads, rivers and urban areas have been placed based on the SPI’s Operation Olympic boardgame map from 1974. Airport locations have been placed based on what I could find online; there are probably more on the island that I don’t know about. Tree cover is based off Jakub Marian’s Tree cover of Kyushu, Shikoku, Chugoku and Kansai[jakubmarian.com]. The two images showing the American plans for Operation Downfall and the Japanese deployment on Kyūshū are from Issue #45 of S&T (Strategy & Tactics).

Notes:
– The scenario is probably quite unbalanced, I haven’t playtested it much, but I have won on normal with both the Japanese and the Americans. Right now it’s definitely more biased towards the Americans because of their large fleet and shore bombardment capabilities.
– I’ve filled in tree cover using a 2010 forest cover map of Kyūshū, if anyone has any better knowledge of where forest tiles should be then I am happy to adjust the map accordingly.
– I’m not the most knowledgeable on American/Japanese vehicles, so if I’ve given either side units that are not particularly historical or accurate, then please do tell me.

Know Bugs/Issues:
– The Japanese fleet likes to kamikaze its carrier into American forces whilst the rest of its fleet sits near Sasebo and I have no idea why.
