Unite the Latin West
A long time in the making, this mod adds a trio of similar decisions focused on consolidating Latin Europe. There’s significant overlap between at least two of the three decisions, just for the sake of extra flexibility, depending on how exactly you want to flavor your pan-Latin empire!
Basic requirements and effects are as follows:
RESTORE THE WESTERN ROMAN EMPIRE
Requirements:
– completely control the regions of Italy, Francia, Iberia, and Illyricum
– have your capital in one of the first three core regions listed above
– hold the Empire of Italia, Francia, or Hispania as your primary title
– either (1) hold the Holy Roman Empire as a secondary title or (2) completely control the Duchy of Tunis
– be of a culture with Latin, Frankish, or Iberian heritage
– have taken the base game’s "Unify Italy" decision
– 60+ papal opinion or a hook on the Pope
– be Illustrious or better
– be Christian
Effects:
– all de jure kingdoms within your held empire(s) become de jure vassals of the Western Roman Empire
– controlled kingdoms sharing borders with your current de jure territory become de jure parts of the WRE (or potentially another empire you hold if it shares borders with the targets)
– the Holy Roman Empire is destroyed and replaced with the Empire of Germania
– you get the nickname "Restitutor" or "Restitutrix Imperii" (Latin for "restorer of the empire")
UNITE THE LATIN WEST
Requirements:
– completely control the regions of Italy, Francia, and Iberia
– have your capital in one of the three core regions listed above
– hold the Empire of Italia, Francia, or Hispania as your primary title
– alternatively, hold the HRE as your primary title and completely control at least one kingdom in each of the three aforementioned regions (and meet all subsequent requirements)
– be of a culture with Latin, Frankish, or Iberian heritage
– be Christian
Effects:
– all de jure kingdoms within the three core regions of Italy, Francia, and Iberia become de jure vassals of the Latin Empire
– if held de jure and neighboring other de jure land, the Kingdom(s) of Croatia and/or Serbia form the Empire of Illyria, which is granted to you
– if held de jure, any neighboring Balkan kingdom(s) form(s) the Empire of Macedonia, which is granted to you
– any other de jure kingdoms outside of the three core regions but bordering at least one held empire is randomly shifted into a neighboring empire you hold
– you get the nickname "Custos Latinorum" (Latin for "guardian of the Latins")
UNITE THE WESTERN ROMAN CLAIMANTS
Requirements:
– either (1) have the Empire of Italia as your primary title or (2) have the Latin Empire as your primary title with your capital in the region of Italy
– hold the Holy Roman Empire as a secondary title
– be of a culture with Latin heritage
– be Christian
Effects:
– the HRE merges into your primary title to form the Florentine Empire
Essentially, the Western Roman Empire is intended for those who are eager to invoke the ancient and noble Roman past, the Latin Empire is intended for those who want at least some of the same prestige but would also like to forge a distinct neo-Latin identity, and the Florentine Empire is for those who routinely end up holding both Holy Roman and Italian titles and see little point in having two different Western Roman claimant titles if they’re vested in the same person.
The vanilla game’s Latin Empire, the one centered on Thessalonica formed by an anti-Byzantine crusade, has been relabeled as the Constantinopolitan Empire, which conveniently enough, was a term actually used during the relevant time period, according to my albeit cursory research.
The full-fledged Roman Restoration decision has been tweaked a bit, mainly so that it doesn’t stupidly coexist with the HRE. Forming the WRE or full Roman Empire now unlocks the formation of the Empire of Germania for Christian rulers. If the de jure HRE has grown significantly beyond its default borders, the Roman restoration event will break it up again much like how it breaks Byzantium up into Macedonia, Anatolia, etc. The WRE will be likewise broken up into its original constituent empires if it goes on to form the full Roman Empire.
This is my most ambitious mod yet, so I welcome any questions, comments, critiques, and especially bug reports. Language support for English, Spanish, and French is included. I did the translations myself, so I welcome suggestions or other feedback from native Spanish- and/or French-speakers as well.
NOTA BENE: For purposes of complete control, the region of Francia includes all of the territory covered by the default Empire of Francia plus the Duchy of Bar, which is de jure part of Lotharingia and thus the HRE,
