AD 528: Justinian the Great
The Roman world was forever changed in AD 451, when the armies of Rome and her allies halted the advance of Attila the Hun at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains (Châlons). Although the Empire had survived one of the greatest threats in its history, the victory proved only a temporary reprieve. Decades of political instability, economic decline, civil war, and relentless barbarian invasions steadily eroded the foundations of the Western Roman Empire.
In AD 476, the last Western Emperor, Romulus Augustulus, was deposed by the Germanic warlord Odoacer, marking the end of the Western Roman Empire. Across the former imperial provinces, powerful kingdoms emerged in its place. The Ostrogoths ruled Italy, the Visigoths dominated Hispania, the Franks expanded across Gaul, the Vandals controlled North Africa, and the Burgundians established themselves along the Rhône. The Eternal City itself had fallen into barbarian hands, while the unity that had once defined the Roman world faded into history.
Yet Rome did not die.
In the East, the Roman Empire endured. From the magnificent capital of Constantinople, the Eastern Roman Empire preserved the institutions, administration, military traditions, laws, and culture of Imperial Rome. Wealthier, more stable, and defended by formidable walls, the Eastern Empire remained the last great bastion of Roman civilisation.
Now, in AD 528, a new Emperor ascends the throne.
Justinian I inherits an empire of immense strength but equally immense ambition. Inspired by the legacy of Augustus, Trajan, Constantine, and Theodosius, Justinian dreams not merely of defending what remains of Rome—but of reclaiming what has been lost. His vision is nothing less than the restoration of Imperial authority across the Mediterranean, the reunification of the Roman world, and the rebirth of the Pax Romana.
The reconquest of Africa, Italy, and eventually Hispania lies ahead. To achieve these monumental objectives, the Empire must rebuild its armies, strengthen its economy, reform its administration, and confront powerful enemies on every frontier. To the east, the mighty Sassanid Persian Empire remains Rome’s ancient rival. Along the Danube, ambitious barbarian tribes watch for weakness. Across the seas, ambitious kingdoms stand ready to resist the return of Roman rule.
Will Justinian restore the glory of the Caesars and forge a new Golden Age of Roman civilisation?
Or will the Empire overextend itself in pursuit of an impossible dream?
