Description:
Overview

This mod is designed to make India and Chandragupta more powerful, more interesting, and more historically flavorful. Best paired with the Civilizations Expanded mod for balance purposes, one of my favorite mods but one which did not satisfy me with its treatment of India.

Arthashastra

Gain +2 Governor titles upon unlocking Political Philosophy. Constructing a Holy Site grants +1 Envoy and +1 Trade Route capacity. Military units in foreign territory heal at the end of each turn, even after moving and attacking. Gain access to the War of Territorial Expansion casus belli after unlocking Military Training.

Dharma

+50% Faith from Holy Site buildings. Cities with worship buildings gain Food, Production, and Gold equal to 15% of their Faith. +1 Amenity from all present Religions as well as their Follower Belief bonuses. Each Population grants +0.2 Science and +0.2 Culture. Each specialized district grants an additional +0.2 in the corresponding yield per Population.

Representing India

India is among the world’s most ancient and diversely accomplished civilizations and one of my personal favorites to study. It’s a place which birthed two of the world’s most dominant world religions, which produced deep philosophical insights early on which would not be replicated in Europe for thousands of years, which spent the majority of human history as the richest place in the world, which produced some of the greatest works of art and literature ever made, and played a key role in developing the foundations of our scientific and mathematical knowledge. Chandragupta himself was guided by a sophisticated, secular philosophy in the Arthashastra, long before such a manner of statecraft was to be articulated elsewhere.

Yet where is this deep and rich history reflected in either the base game design or in the Expanded mod design? I have long wanted to play India as it truly seems to be in history and have been left unsatisfied by its narrow interpretation, its clunky features patched together to underwhelming effect. No more will India be a straightforward peace loving religious guru, nor will it be an overly simplistic, brute force conqueror. I want the real India, the one which stood at the pinnacle of global innovation and prosperity for thousands of years. Thus, I present my version of India’s legacy.
