The War in Donbas began in 2014 following the Ukrainian Revolution and the Russian annexation of Crimea, evolving into a prolonged conflict between Ukrainian forces and Russian-backed separatists in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions. Within this conflict, the small Donbas Imarat Battalion emerged as a volunteer unit primarily composed of North Caucasian fighters, including those aligned with the Caucasus Emirate ideology. These fighters view their participation on the Ukrainian side as a direct continuation of their long-standing resistance against Russian federal authority in the Caucasus. Operating as a specialized force, they often engage in reconnaissance and asymmetric warfare, representing a distinct faction of Chechen volunteers standing in direct opposition to the pro-Russian "Kadyrovite" units.
