Wat Rong Khun Wonder
Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple, is a Buddhist temple complex located outside Chiang Rai, Thailand. Envisioned and designed by a single devoted artist, the renowned Chalermchai Kositpipat, Wat Rong Khun began construction in 1997 and is still a work in progress — though open to the public, completion is not expected until the year 2070. "Only death can stop my dream but cannot stop my project," Chalermchai was quoted as saying about the temple, adding that he believes the work will give him "immortal life". Known for its ornately detailed, strikingly white surfaces, Wat Rong Khun also incorporates mirrors and glass in such a way that the structure resembles porcelain from a distance, as well as bizarre murals within which incorporate contemporary pop culture figures such as Michael Jackson, Freddy Kreuger, and a T-800 Terminator amidst scenes like the 9/11 terrorist attacks and nuclear explosions.
