The age of the great Emperor Justinian has passed into legend. His mighty reign restored vast provinces of the lost Western Empire, codified Roman law for generations to come, and raised magnificent monuments that proclaimed the enduring strength of New Rome. Yet the glory of his achievements has faded beneath the weight of decades of war, plague, and mounting hardship.
The Justinianic Dynasty has fallen. Following the overthrow of Emperor Maurice, the usurper Phocas seized the Imperial Throne in Constantinople through bloodshed and terror. Maurice, his sons, and the last surviving members of the Imperial household were ruthlessly murdered, bringing an abrupt and violent end to one of the greatest dynasties in Roman history. Across the Empire, governors, generals, and loyal soldiers watched in horror as the ancient order collapsed.
The murder of the lawful Emperor has plunged the Roman world into chaos. In the East, the mighty Sassanid Persian Empire has declared war, claiming to avenge Maurice and restore justice. Persian armies surge across Mesopotamia, Armenia, and Syria, while Roman frontier defences crumble beneath relentless assault. Never since the darkest days of the Crisis of the Third Century has the Empire faced such peril.
Yet hope has not been extinguished.
Far to the south, within the wealthy Exarchate of Africa, the Exarch Heraclius and his son have raised the standard of rebellion. Declaring Phocas a tyrant unworthy of the Imperial Purple, they gather loyal legions, powerful fleets, and influential allies to overthrow the usurper and restore legitimate government to the Roman Empire.
Should Heraclius prevail, he will inherit an Empire scarred by civil war and threatened on every frontier. The Persians continue their advance, the Avars and Slavs press across the Balkans, and ambitious kings watch eagerly for Roman weakness. Only a ruler of extraordinary determination can reunite the Empire, reform its exhausted armies, and restore Roman supremacy across the known world.
