The Unbound

Keeping things in line with how my classes are getting increasingly strange…

The Unbound is a unique, once-per-campaign psionic soldier class recruited through the Skirmishers.

A former ADVENT psi-operative who broke conditioning, the Unbound uses Attunement, Aporia, and brutal discipline to bend the fight around a single will.

Lore

During their psionic training, the Unbound encountered a paradox that forced them out of the receptive state required for conditioning to take hold.

A fundamental schism with their intended paradigm left them lost, but unconstrained.

This strong-willed operative found themselves free to rewrite their own reality through their aptitude for psionics.

The Unbound’s understanding of reality breaks down into three categories, detailed below as Praxis, Hexis, and Nomos.

By developing these three interpretations of reality, they are able to harness their psionic potential and direct it in ways the Elders would never condone or permit.

Faced with the inevitability of their own discovery and likely destruction, they took the first opportunity to escape.

The Skirmishers welcomed the Unbound and provided sanctuary for this ADVENT pariah.

Recruitment

The Unbound is recruited through a unique Skirmisher covert action.

Only one Unbound can be recruited per campaign.

The covert action will not appear if you already have an Unbound in your crew.

Core Mechanics

Attunement

Attunement is the Unbound’s main power state.

Activating Attunement grants Attunement stacks. While Attuned, the Unbound gains bonus effects on attacks and unlocks several class abilities.

Attunement stacks decay over time and are spent by stronger abilities.

Core Abilities

Attune

The Unbound’s main activation button.

Attune grants Attunement stacks and turns on the Unbound’s core psionic state. While Attuned, offensive actions apply Aporia and several class abilities become available.

Dilemma

A basic psionic attack that inflicts Aporia on a visible enemy.

Dilemma is a simple way to start building pressure, setting up stronger follow-up abilities and discipline effects.

Origin

Each Unbound begins with one of four random origin packages based on their prior ADVENT role:

Priest

Psi-Lancer

Sorcerer

Officer

These origins grant a small starting package of bonus abilities, giving each Unbound a slightly different flavor from campaign to campaign.

Grapple

The Unbound retains Skirmisher-style mobility through Grapple, helping them reposition, flank, and keep pressure on key targets.

Equipment

Primary Weapon

The Unbound can equip a Bullpup or Psionic Reaper.

Custom Secondary Weapon

The Unbound uses the Psi-Ripjack, a custom secondary weapon that combines a Skirmisher Ripjack with psi amp functionality.

Aporia

Aporia is the Unbound’s core debuff.

Aporia stacks on enemies and causes damage over time, while also applying penalties depending on the Unbound’s discipline path.

In simple terms: apply Aporia, build pressure, then exploit the target before the effect resolves.

Discipline Paths

Praxis

Action defines reality.

Praxis is the aggressive tempo path. It focuses on action economy, movement, melee pressure, and maintaining Attunement through kills. The Praxis focused Unbound is quick and aggressive.

Hexis

Conviction defines reality.

Hexis is the defensive pressure path. It improves Aporia’s control effects, enforces the idea of persistence as a key feature of reality. The Hexis focused Unbound is enduring and relentless.

Nomos

Decision defines reality.

Nomos is the law-and-punishment path. It reshapes Aporia into a more lethal effect, trading stat penalties for damage, shred, and execution pressure. The Nomos focused Unbound is decisive and commanding.

The Psionic Row

Instead of a random XCom Deck
The Unbound gets a fixed psionic row that offers a small selection of core psionic abilities
I may add randomness to it after feedback, but for now it seems fine.

What To Expect

The Unbound is not a standard Psi Operative and not a normal Skirmisher.

They are built around stack management, psionic pressure, and cooldown timing.

They can become extremely strong, but their best turns require setup. Attunement has to be maintained. Aporia stacks have to be applied. The strongest abilities spend the same resource that keeps the class powered. The ebb and flow of attunement determines the tempo of the class.

Notes

The Axiom / Attunement system can be a little complicated at first. Activating the Axiom ability provides 3 stacks of attunement, which decay at a rate of one per turn. While ‘attuned’ the Unbound’s attacks all inflct stacks of a unique DoT effect called Aporia – which ticks for 1 damage per stack every turn and can be further modified by skill choices. This currently affects all offensive actions, including those that normally do not deal damage.

This class is designed as a unique Skirmisher variant, meant to remain distinct but related to that faction.

Only one Unbound is intended per campaign.

Balance is still being tuned, especially around Attunement economy, Aporia scaling, and late-rank perks.

Built with the TedJam environment / requiem legion in mind.
