STR’s Civs: Occidental Rome (10 Years of Civilization VI | ft. Oriental Rome)
Play as the degenerate Honorius and heroic Majorian; in Sid Meier’s Civilization VI.
The later Roman Empire suffered greatly due to civil wars and the mass migrations of voracious Germans and Scythians. The cracks in the imperial administration began show under several earlier imperators, including Marcus Aurelius who struggled to muster troops for a campaign against Germans or Septimius Severus who allowed more of the budget to be consumed by the hungering army. The Crisis of the Third Century, being realised under the battered Gallienus and solved under the ruthless Aurelian, gave the Roman Empire enough willpower to linger for another century proper. Diocletian’s tetrarchy was yet another reform that the empire as it suggested multiple royal courts could increase the longevity of the state. The latest end of the suffocating Roman state in the west would have been between 476 AD – 480 AD; however, the eastern court would endure another 1,000 years.
