[DF] Petro’s Folly
I understand the wall of text below is daunting. Many mods provide very little information, so I wanted to explain exactly what this mod adds. TL;DR: A companion mod with a custom game start, clues leading to the companion’s location, and special dialogue based on stat checks, race checks, game states, and allies. (Which I recommend checking out below.)

Petro’s Folly is a story-driven companion mod centered around Petro and his relationship with his son. This mod adds a new custom game start where you play as Petro’s son, following a series of clues left behind by your father as you travel across Kenshi in search of him.
If you already know Petro’s location, or happen to find him naturally, you can still recruit him without following the intended clues. (Some dialogue with Petro might be odd if you haven’t gone through each step to recruit him. You take the risk!)
It should be very vanilla-friendly. I tried to balance all the new characters… well, except Mr. Handsome. That guy is a freak. Otherwise, the mod is vanilla-friendly.
An import is required for existing saves.
I recommend starting with the Petro’s Folly game start and as a Male Greenlander for the intended experience.
A certain NPC will not speak with you, making it impossible to follow the intended questline. However, I have left it available to play male and female, as well as Scorchlanders with the custom start.
- New custom game start: Petro’s Folly
- Approximately 500 lines of branching dialogue, plus 200 additional lines for interactions around the world
- Different dialogue depending on race, gender, strength, and actions
- A companion with a personal history tied to the Holy Nation
- Multiple optional conversations and lore discoveries
- Read the letter left by Petro.
- Travel to The Hub.
- Speak with Wallace. (Requires a Male Greenlander. Requires you to be stronger than Wallace approximately ~10 combat stats should do).
- Travel to Black Scratch.
- Find Mr. Handsome.
- Mr. Handsome can be recruited, but currently has no additional dialogue.
- Find Petro.
- Speak with him and recruit him. (Requires you to be stronger than him if you wish to recruit without being his son.)
Petro’s Location
- Petro is in the city of World’s End.
– You can read this here, in the game start description, or never. Which is what I would do if I downloaded this mod.
Your father, a former Paladin, is disgraced and gone.
Years ago, he led an assault into the lands of Bast. The campaign was doomed when a hidden clique of Skin Bandits revealed themselves from within his own ranks. Caught between the United Cities’ finest samurai to the front and Skin Bandits from within, his force was annihilated.
Only a handful of Holy Nation soldiers survived that day, including your father. Missing his left arm, starving, and accompanied by only three surviving servants of Okran, he clawed his way back to Stack.
Hounded by bandits and hunted by the wildlife of the wastes, he somehow kept his remaining men alive. He had lost his soldiers, his honor, and his faith. His unwavering devotion to Okran had finally been broken.
His failed campaign would forever be remembered as: Petro’s Folly, a stain upon an otherwise distinguished legacy.
High Inquisitor Seta learned of the infiltration and ambush. Unable to believe Holy Nation soldiers could have been deceived by Skin Bandits, he searched for someone to blame.
Convinced it was another of Narko’s schemes, he placed the blame upon your mother, accusing her of allowing corruption to take root.
She was condemned and sent to the pits of Rebirth. The day your father marched for Bast was the last day you ever saw him. When word of Petro’s Folly reached Stack, you mourned him as dead. That same day, your mother was taken away.
Then came another rumor. Your father had returned alive, broken, and barely clinging to life. Before you could see him, he disappeared once again. This time, you knew he was never coming back.
Since then, the light of Okran has left your eyes.
You now live as a young man in Stack. Your heart has grown hardened by loss. Deep down, you have begun to believe what the priests preach: that your family’s suffering was born from your own lack of faith.
Seeing no future in Stack, you abandoned your old name and set out to become someone new.
Now, on your eighteenth birthday, a longtime friend of your father places a worn letter into your hands. Within its weathered pages, you finally discover your purpose: Find your father.
- Speaking to Petro as an armless character.
- Speaking to Petro while stronger than him. (Recommended – adds an additional ~125 lines of dialogue, including some really cool ones! This is the only way to recruit him without starting as his son.)
- Speaking to Petro as a Greenlander.
- Speaking to Petro while allied with the Skin Bandits.
- Speaking to Petro while allied with the Skin Bandits and being his son.
- Speaking to Mr. Handsome as a female character.
- Speaking to Mr. Handsome if you are female and/or have defeated the Bugmaster.
I may be forgetting some special dialogue, but these are the major ones.
The mod is currently in beta, and I am still actively fixing issues, so you may encounter issues.
I might add more dialogue, fixes, and improvements in future updates. Future updates may require importing your save if you wish to see new dialogue or changes.
I also understand that this mod is not 100% lore accurate. I never thought Kenshi was that strict about its lore, so hopefully it does not feel too out of place. I do think the idea of Skin Bandits hiding themselves inside the Holy Nation is awesomely stupid and definitely not very serious compared to the original lore. But otherwise, I am willing to fix anything that feels out of place.
Performance should not be a concern at all.
This mod should be compatible with most other mods. The only conflicts should come from something crazy, like a mod deleting The Hub.
They are pretty old and dated, but I’m sure they aren’t completely broken…
