To close off the 2009 grid, these were the two most interesting events:
1. Jeremy Mayfield entered 2009 as an owner‑driver for Mayfield Motorsports, but his season unraveled after a positive drug test following the Richmond race. He denied the result, saying it came from a mix of Adderall and Claritin‑D, and even had his suspension briefly lifted in July. But when NASCAR reported a second positive test with supporting evidence, the case effectively ended his career, and he never raced in the Cup Series again.
2. Dexter Bean qualifies family-run team at Texas 43-field, this was a huge achievement when largely funded teams dominated NASCAR’s competitive "Top 35" era. Qualifying alone was seen as a victory.
