Betrothal System Mod
Betrothal System (Player Only)
Seal alliances in blood and lineage. This mod adds a historical betrothal system to Europa Universalis V, arrange a future marriage between a child of your court and a member of another realm, hold both parties to the promise until they come of age, and let it blossom into a true marriage.
What It Does
- Propose betrothals between your court and another monarchy or theocracy through a friendly diplomatic action.
- Betroth almost anyone – your ruler, heir, their children, or a noble of your court to a character in the other realm.
- Child–adult or child–child pairings. At least one of the pair must be under sixteen; they may be promised to a partner of any age (as long as both are unwed).
- Binding promise. Betrothed characters gain a Betrothed status that blocks them from marrying anyone else while the pledge stands.
- Automatic marriage. Once both betrothed reach adulthood, the betrothal converts into a real marriage on its own, and both courts are notified.
- Multiple betrothals at once. Marry off several children to several different realms, each betrothal is tracked independently.
- Break a betrothal at a cost. Dissolving a pledge is a breach of dynastic honour: it costs legitimacy and sours relations with the jilted party.
- Consequences that matter. Opinion shifts for agreeing to, honouring, or breaking a betrothal, so your reputation as a dependable dynastic partner has weight.
- It resolves itself gracefully. If a betrothed character dies before coming of age, the betrothal is quietly dissolved with no dishonour, only grief.
How It Works
- Open the diplomacy view of another realm and use Propose Betrothal. Pick the character from your court, then the character from theirs.
- Both characters receive the Betrothed modifier, which holds them out of any other marriage.
- Each month the mod checks your betrothals. When both partners are grown and still single, it performs the marriage and sends an event to both courts.
- To call it off, use the Break Betrothal action on the betrothed character and choose which pledge to dissolve, at the expected diplomatic price.
What It Does NOT Do (Yet)
- Player-only for now. Only you can propose or break betrothals. The AI will not arrange betrothals of its own, nor will it break the ones you make with it. (Your betrothals with AI realms still convert to marriage automatically.)
- No dowries, alliances, or treaty bundling. A betrothal is purely a marriage pledge, it does not force an alliance or transfer money/land.
- No claims or succession trickery. The resulting marriage behaves like any normal marriage; the mod adds no special inheritance or union mechanics on top of it.
Compatibility
- Standalone and self-contained, it only adds new content and does not overwrite vanilla files, so it should play nicely with most other mods.
- Safe to add to an existing save.
