ITS Andrea Doria (C 553) Mod.1976
ITS Andrea Doria (hull number C 553) is the lead ship of the Andrea Doria-class helicopter guided-missile cruisers operated by the Marina Militare Italiana (MMI, Italian Navy), distinct from the later Horizon-class air-defence destroyer sharing the same name with hull number D 553.
Laid down on 11 May 1958 at Cantieri del Tirreno shipyard in Riva Trigoso, Liguria, the warship was launched on 27 February 1963 and formally commissioned into Italian naval service on 23 February 1964. The vessel was named after Andrea Doria, a celebrated Genoese admiral of the Renaissance, and formed a two-ship class alongside her sister ship ITS Caio Duilio (C 554); a planned third unit Enrico Dandolo (C 555) was ultimately cancelled.
Designed as a dual-role escort platform for NATO Mediterranean task forces, Andrea Doria integrated long-range anti-air warfare (AAW) and organic anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter capacity, an innovative layout for European warships of the early 1960s. Her standard displacement reached 5,000 tons, with a full-load displacement of 6,500 tons, an overall length of 149.3 metres and a beam of 17.3 metres.
