King Władysław III of Poland lies dead, the Hungarian army has scattered, and the last major crusade of Christendom has ended in utter failure. The thousand-year-old Byzantine Empire is on the verge of collapse, isolated and without allies. Though the walls of Constantinople still stand, the empire is but a flickering candle in the wind. The Ottoman Empire’s sword grows ever sharper in the Balkans; Sultan Murad II has just handed the throne over to the young Mehmed II.
In Western Europe, England and France remain mired in the Hundred Years’ War, a conflict that has spanned generations and brought endless suffering. On the Iberian Peninsula, the Reconquista, which has lasted seven centuries, is finally approaching its end, and the monarchs of Portugal and Castile have begun to turn their gaze towards the vast world beyond the Atlantic.
In the distant East, the Ming Empire has stood for eighty years. The glories of the Yongle era have faded, and the young Zhu Qizhen now sits upon the dragon throne, yet beneath the surface of the Forbidden City, undercurrents of intrigue swirl. Esen of the Oirats is uniting the Mongol tribes, and the clouds of the Tumu Crisis are already gathering on the horizon. Meanwhile, the authority of Japan’s Ashikaga shogunate is increasingly challenged by the various daimyos across the land.
