Description:
Mutations: Cross-Pollinated
Short version:

This mod allows you to crossbreed different mutations to make hybrids.

Do other mods already do this?

Somewhat, there are other mods that will allow you to have hybrid mutations.

Why this mod?

It uses a different system compared to other mods like it. This mod allows you to farm for mutations.

  • It changes some behavior of pollinator critters
  • It allows for seed production through a new mutant variant.
  • It tries to combine hybrids in a more reasonable manner than just adding them together.

Its not as complex as the long version might seem. That is just a more detailed description.

Please be sure to revisit after gaming and leave a like if you are enjoying the mod.

Long Version:

Turn Oxygen Not Included’s plant mutations into a complete breeding system.

Mutations: Cross-Pollinated adds five new mutations, cross-species genetic transport by Sweetles, Grubgrubs, and Mimikas, inherited traits and visuals, and 91 named hybrid strains.

Receptive plants collect two different mutation samples. Once both parents are locked, each successful bonus-seed roll can produce either parent, another Receptive seed, or a rare hybrid combining both mutations.

New Mutations
Fibrous

Requires 250 rads.
Uses 25% more fertilizer.
Produces Reed Fiber alongside the normal crop.
Fiber output averages 0.25 Reed Fiber per growth cycle.
Wild plants produce fiber at their naturally reduced rate.
Uses a gold whole-plant tint.

Cryophilic

Requires 250 rads.
Shifts the plant’s full viable temperature range 15°C colder.
Both wilting and lethal temperatures are shifted.
Uses an icy cyan tint.

Thermophilic

Requires 250 rads.
Shifts the plant’s full viable temperature range 15°C hotter.
Both wilting and lethal temperatures are shifted.
Uses a crimson tint.

Receptive

Requires 250 rads.
Stores two different mutation samples delivered by pollinating creatures.
Accepts supported mutations from any plant species.
Produces parent, Receptive, or hybrid offspring.
Uses a violet tint.

Stabilized

Requires no radiation.
Grows 20% faster.
Creates radiation-free hybrid strains.
Uses a teal tint.

Pollination and Pollinizers

ONI already uses pollination for the temporary growth bonus provided by Sweetles, Grubgrubs, and Mimikas.

This mod adds a separate genetic item called a pollinizer:

Pollination is the creature’s normal growth effect.
A pollinizer is a mutation sample carried between plants.

How Cross-Pollination Works

A pollinating creature visits a Receptive plant.
If it carries no sample, it searches for a reachable mutated donor.
The collected mutation is delivered as Genetic Parent 1.

The plant enters Partial Pollination, preserving the first visit’s growth effect while remaining available for another genetic visit.

A second, different mutation is delivered as Genetic Parent 2.

After Parent 2 arrives, Partial Pollination is removed, the second visit’s ordinary Pollinated effect remains, and Cross-Pollinated becomes the persistent genetic lock.

Cross-Pollinated does not count as ordinary pollination or prevent later ordinary pollination. It only prevents additional pollinizer collection until the plant completes a harvest.

Stored parents do not expire.

Genetic Rules

The two parents must be different. Duplicate samples are rejected, Partial Pollination is refreshed, and the plant continues waiting for another mutation.

The following cannot act as donors:

Receptive plants
Completed hybrids
Unsupported third-party mutations

Completed hybrids are sterile endpoints and cannot begin further breeding chains.

Pollinator Behavior

Sweetles, Grubgrubs, and Mimikas can:
Carry mutation samples between plant species.
Remember collected samples.
Prefer valid donors and waiting Receptive plants.
Avoid duplicating Genetic Parent 1.
Ignore invalid, reserved, unreachable, or completed targets.

During active genetic errands, creatures may bypass their normal pollination-search cooldown when a valid target exists.

Sweetles and Grubgrubs search within approximately 25 tiles. Mimikas retain their normal range and navigation behavior.

Original pollination effects remain unchanged:

Wild and tame creatures retain their normal pollination strength.

Cross-Species Genetics

Mutation samples can move between completely different plant species.

For example, Leafy and Wildish samples collected from separate plants can be delivered to a Receptive Bristle Blossom. Its offspring remain Bristle Blossom seeds, but may carry Leafy, Wildish, Receptive, or the Sunseason hybrid.

Seeds and Offspring

Whenever a genetically locked plant succeeds on a bonus-seed roll, the resulting mutation is selected using these weights:

30% — Genetic Parent 1
30% — Genetic Parent 2
25% — Receptive
15% — Named hybrid

The plant species is always preserved.

After every completed harvest, whether or not the bonus-seed roll produces a seed, the plant clears Genetic Parent 1, Genetic Parent 2, Cross-Pollinated, Partial Pollination, and ordinary Pollinated.

It can then begin a new breeding cycle.

Named Hybrids

The mod includes 14 supported donors and 91 breeding-only hybrid strains.

Examples:

Blooming + Easygoing = Meadowbloom
Blooming + Licey = Mealbloom
Leafy + Wildish = Sunseason
Cryophilic + Thermophilic = Adaptive
Exuberant + Stabilized = Tamed
Fibrous + Cryophilic = Iceweave
Bountiful + Stabilized = Steadycrop

Hybrids cannot appear through ordinary radiation-mutation rolls and cannot act as genetic donors.

Hybrid Traits

Hybrids inherit meaningful traits from both parents.
Independent effects coexist.
Shared numerical modifiers are blended.
Opposing modifiers move toward the normal baseline.
Binary behavior, such as automatic harvesting or darkness preference, is preserved.
Hybrids producing multiple secondary products use at least 50% more fertilizer.
Conflicting light requirements become a bounded dim-light range.

Some combinations use authored rules when simple blending would produce a weak or contradictory result.

Adaptive

Cryophilic + Thermophilic

Adaptive widens the plant’s viable temperature range by 8°C at both ends instead of allowing the two effects to cancel out.

Stabilized Hybrids

All Stabilized hybrids:

Require no radiation.
Inherit 80% of the other parent’s numerical effects.
Preserve its binary behavior.
Retain Stabilized’s 20% faster growth cycle.

Growth-speed effects combine multiplicatively. This increases production speed, not crop yield.

Visuals
The five new mutations use whole-plant tints rather than additional ornament sprites.

When both parents provide whole-plant tints, the hybrid blends them. Otherwise, it inherits the available tint together with supported ornaments and visual effects.

Supported vanilla decorations include Blooming blossoms, Licey meal lice, and Leafy leaves.

Information Cards

Receptive plants display their stored parents, breeding state, weighted offspring outcomes, and possible hybrid.

Completed hybrids display their name, parents, resolved effects, secondary products, and environmental requirements.

Requirements

Requires the Spaced Out! DLC and its plant-mutation system.
No external mutation mod is required.
Unsupported third-party mutations are safely excluded from breeding.
