Pax Hispanica is an alternate-history mod in which the War of the Spanish Succession never took place. You can play in a scenario where the Spanish Empire still exists as a hegemonic power and explore what might have happened if the Hispanic modernity of the School of Salamanca had prevailed as an alternative to liberal modernity.
BACKGROUND
This alternate universe begins during the 1669 uprising led by Don Juan José of Austria against the government of the regent Mariana of Austria.
In real history, Don Juan José only demanded to be appointed prime minister. In this alternate universe, the Aragonese and Catalan nobility demanded that the succession of Charles II be made conditional, naming Don Juan José as his heir in the event of an early death or a lack of descendants.
The succession agreement received international support from Great Britain, which thereby kept both France and Austria away from the Spanish throne.
The rest of the background is summarized on the game’s loading screen.
CONTENT
THE SPAINS
Spain in this mod is very different from vanilla. It is the multicultural empire created by the House of Austria.
Spanish culture is renamed Castilian, while Castilian, Catalan, Galician, and Basque are primary cultures of the Hispanic Monarchy.
Interest groups have also been adjusted. The Jesuits represent the Devout, while the School of Salamanca represents the Intelligentsia, with unique ideologies inspired by Catholic humanism.
The laws have also been adapted to represent the influence of the School of Salamanca and, in particular, the absence of the Bourbons in Spain.
VICEROYALTIES AND CAPTAINCIES GENERAL
The mod includes a dynamic system for creating new viceroyalties and captaincies general.
Whenever Spain acquires a new subject, it may decide whether to turn it into a viceroyalty or a captaincy general.
Viceroyalties function as dominions, while captaincies general function as puppets. These territories receive cultures, laws, religion, and institutions adapted to the political order of the Hispanic Monarchy.
HOLY ROMAN EMPIRE
In this universe, the Holy Roman Empire was never dismantled.
It is represented as a power bloc led by Austria, while its principalities begin as Austrian protectorates.
Austria’s objective is to gradually reduce the autonomy of the principalities and reunify the Holy Roman Empire.
THE THIRTEEN COLONIES
Spain did not support the independence of the United States because of its cordial relationship with Great Britain.
The United States does not yet exist at the start of the game. Instead, the Thirteen Colonies remain under British rule and may later attempt to achieve independence.
VENICE AND GENOA
The merchant republics of Venice and Genoa survived thanks to Spanish intervention during the coalition wars against France.
Genoa begins as a Spanish protectorate, while Venice retains its independence and its possessions in the Adriatic and Greece.
STRATEGIC REGIONS
The strategic regions of the Americas have been adapted to represent the Hispanic geopolitical order and a cartography different from that used by the United States.
POWER BLOCS
The power blocs have been adjusted to fit the alternate-history setting.
Spain leads the Hispanic Monarchy, while Austria heads the Holy Roman Empire.
HISPANIC CULTURES
The national cultures that emerged after independence do not initially exist in the Americas.
The population is represented primarily through Indian society, composed of Creoles, mestizos, and indigenous peoples integrated into Hispanic culture.
Hispanicized cultures also exist in the Philippines, Indonesia, New Guinea, and New Zealand.
THE MANILA GALLEON AND CHINA
The events of the Heavenly Kingdom have been adapted to represent the influence of Spanish missionaries.
The Taiping Rebellion becomes a Catholic peasant uprising influenced by the Jesuits and by the Port of China, a Spanish concession connected to the trade of the Manila Galleon.
INDIAN DEVELOPMENT
Spain and the viceroyalties begin with greater economic, educational, and demographic development than in vanilla, having avoided both the wars of independence and the Napoleonic occupation.
