Alyx Vance Squadmate (Legacy)

THIS IS FOR THE BASE/LEGACY VERSION OF THE GAME

This mod adds a soldier outfit for one of the best NPCs of all time, Half-Life 2’s Alyx Vance.

While based on her HL2 appearance, this mod is not a port of Valve’s original Alyx model. Rather, it makes use of some heavily modified versions of base X2 meshes (M/F shanty civilian clothes, kevlar soldier arms) with the addition of some custom Alyx-specific additions (belt, necklace, etc.) modelled by me, topped off with all new textures created from scratch (although reusing modified versions of the original normal and AO map elements, where possible). Additionally, a new hair model has been added that is vaguely in the style of Alyx’s mop, derived from one of the base hair models merged with the headband.

I would suggest using Walker, Texas Ranger’s Half-Life 2 Alyx Voice Pack – WTR as a companion mod.

Support has been added for robojumper’s Add Part Names mod, which enables torso, legs, and arms props to be correctly labelled with their name in their relevant Props sub-menu.

I highly recommend the use of RealityMachina’s Wear Armour On Avenger mod. With the use of that mod your soldiers will wear whatever armour you have equipped them with inside the Avenger, rather than the underlay outfit they wear by default. You may also wish to use Mertius’s SWR Full Crew Avenger mod to increase the numbers of soldiers wandering around between missions. Make sure to follow the instructions regarding reinitialising your settings to make it take effect.

The outfit has been cobbled together from effectively half a dozen different models. While I have done my best to avoid it, as a consequence there may be some issues with gaps between meshes or clipping due to differing skin weights, especially in animations with extreme deformation. If you spot anything egregious, let me know in the comments and I will attempt to address it.

There are a few minor texture issues, mostly due to the way X2’s PBR system works. Trying to get the X2 material setup to properly render the textures as they appear in other PBR systems is a real pain. I may make adjustments in the future. Although given that you are mostly looking at your soldiers from a bird’s eye view it shouldn’t be a major problem.

The hair is not fantastic. I really suck at making hair.

No, I won’t be making the outfit tintable or use patterns. Don’t ask.

I no longer play the legacy version of the game. I have provided a legacy version of this mod as a courtesy for those that do, but I have not done any testing beyond a basic check that the parts appear in the character pool editor. I don’t expect there to be any problems, as most technical issues should already have been ironed out during the WOTC-version testing, but let me know in the comments if something is amiss.

I learned a lot by poking through the contents of other people’s mods, such as [GWJ] Kexx and Dor, to see how things worked, as well as reading various tutorials and forum/Reddit posts by the likes of E3245. Many thanks to them and the rest of the X2 modding community for their help, direct and indirect.
