History:
Rungholt was a prosperous city in northern Friesland, north of Germany. It was submerged by the waves of a storm surge (the first "Mandraenke grote") in the North Sea that covered the whole region on January 16, 1362. Rungholt was located on the island of Strand, completely submerged by another Storm wave in 1634, and only the islets of Pellworm and Nordstrand remain. The ruins of the city were found in the Wadden Sea in the late twentieth century, but waves and currents transported and sedimented the artifacts farther into the sea. In the 1920s and 1930s, some were exposed, which suggested a population of 1500 to 2000 people, which is quite important for the region and time: it seems that Rungholt was a large port. Nevertheless the legend enlarges its size and its richness. Impressed and inspired by the destiny of this city, by the ruins, but also by the exaggerations of the legend, the German poet Detlev von Liliencron wrote about this lost city a poem that begins with these words: Heut bin ich aber Rungholt gefahren , die Stadt ging unter vor funfhundert Jahren ("Today I passed over Rungholt, the city engulfed five hundred years ago").
