History:
Kition is a city on the southeastern coast of Cyprus, currently Larnaca. Despite its importance during antiquity, it remains relatively unknown, partly because the current Larnaca was built on the exact site of the ancient city. However, the archaeological excavations made it possible to release an imposing part of the fortified enclosure which surrounded the city as well as important vestiges, dating from the classical and Roman times. The city, which has almost never ceased to be inhabited for four millennia since the Bronze Age – towards the end of the 3rd millennium BC. J. – C. – is already mentioned in the Bible in the form "Kitim". Occupied as early as 1800, as evidenced by several tombs dating from that time, and specialized in the production and work of copper to Egypt, the first city is, it seems, destroyed around 1225 by invaders Achaeans probably from the Peloponnese. Towards the twelfth century, the city was rebuilt by Cypriots first and then after a new destruction to -1190, attributed to the people of the sea by Achaeans. The city is again destroyed in the 11th century BC by an earthquake that destroys the cyclopean walls erected by the Achaeans. The installation in the ninth century of a counter by Phoenicians of Tire, who very quickly control the city, reinforces the commercial dimension of the city. The Phoenician presence explains Kition’s refusal to participate in the Ionian revolt, like the other cities of the island. Athenian strategist Cimon dies during the Kition siege to -450 / -449. In -312, the king of Macedonia Ptolemy Soter seizes Kition and puts to death Pumiathon, his last king.
