Hardcore Lite (v.250)
DESCRIPTION:
In this mod I have attempted to take the death penalty in softcore beyond just removing gold and xp to make staying alive more compelling. The mod also aims to fully remove the ability to “death zerg” bosses and force you to try and survive for the whole battle. Hopefully it finally takes softcore closer to the rush of hardcore mode, without that feeling that you have to play so conservatively that you spend the whole game running away from monsters.
MOD BASICS:
– Reworked Resurrection UI
– "Resurrect in Town" only option
– "Quit without saving" removed
– 50% gold and 25% xp penalty
– Active Portal closed on death
– All enemies (including bosses) within 24m are fully healed on player death

DETAILS:
For starters, I have still increased gold and xp penalties as follows:
-50% Gold
-25% Xp
(I have chosen not to include a Fame penalty, as in my experience all it does is end up making a character feel broken and irredeemable when that negative fame adds up.)
In addition, a number of key changes have been made to the resurrection UI and mechanics:
-The only option now available on death is Resurrect in Town.
-You can no longer Quit without Saving, as I feel this was always a way to cheat paying your gold death tax and sometimes even avoid losing as much xp.
-Also when you die, your active town portal is closed and all enemies within 24m are fully healed.
(The aim here is to take away the ability to quickly respawn, rush back to your portal and kamikaze yourself over and over again till the boss finally dies. Believe me I’ve done it :))
-Asthetically, I changed the look of the res menu and added a sound effect just to rub it in that you died :).
I want to thank doudley for all his help getting these tweaks to actually work how I wanted them to. He came up with pretty much all of the ui logic (and even helped test some of it) and then gave me a step by step crash course on implementing it myself. Cheers mate!

*Multi-Player update – I’ve altered the mp menu in an attempt to make it usable in mp, but it still needs to be tested. Any help with that would be most welcome 😉

RnF’s excellent LAO III mod is a good fit too, seeing as LAO III relies heavily on saving gold to enchant and upgrade your gear.
