University Hospital of Cadiz
The University Hospital of Cadiz is a (fictional) large regional teaching hospital in the South of Spain, designed by a practising doctor.
This modern purpose built hospital has over 200 beds and employs 500 staff. The layout of the hospital allows efficient movement of patients and staff, based around a central atrium. A new emergency department and ICU were recent additions to the hospital and put in to a new extension above the ambulance bay.
Uniquely, the hospital has been arranged so that the operating department can operate efficiently, with an office suite for specialist surgical and anaesthetic staff based on the operating department floor. None of the departments has its own anaesthetist. There is a special offices of anaesthetists (from the ICU department) in the operating department who have their role set to "anaesthesia at surgery" only. These can work with any surgical team. Nurses and surgeons only fulfil operating roles.
Some large departments have separate offices just for patient transport nurses (eg: emergency dept requires a lot of them).
The hospital comprises of:
Ground floor – emergency clinic, outpatient departments, pharmacy, canteen, receptions, ambulance bay, canteen, gift shop.
1st floor – trauma room, emergency ward, radiology, labs.
2nd floor – operating theatres, pathology department, ICU, anaesthetic and operating department offices, executive directors suite canteen, staff rooms, hospital services department.
3rd floor – infectious diseases, general internal medicine, canteen, visiting lounge.
4th floor – cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery, neurology and neurosurgery, canteen, visiting lounge.
5th floor – gynaecology, general surgery, canteen, visiting lounge.
6th floor – orthopaedics, private unit (plastic surgery), canteen, visiting lounge.
7th floor – clinical education unit and board room, helipad.
There is of course room to expand the floors to include other specialties…
