Description:
London, Brighton & South Coast Railway E1 Class 0-6-0T

This is a model of the London Brighton and South Coast railway E1 Class tank engine, designed by William Stroudley. Known as ‘E-Tanks’, 80 examples of this class were built between 1874 and 1891. A popular and well-liked goods engine and shunter, the E1 was also used for secondary passenger duties when needed. Incredibly well-built, reliable and surprisingly powerful for its size – traits common in many of Stroudleys designs – many E1s passed to the Southern Railway following the grouping, with 30 examples even beign transferred to British Railways. Finally replaced by diesel shunters in the 1950s, the last E1 was scrapped in 1961, meaning the class was in operation for 87 years.
